TEST DRIVE MEME #1

Welcome to Glencola Reef's first Test Drive Meme! This is a place where anyone interested in applying a character - or just curious to see how their characters might interact with the setting and others in the game - can mingle with one another. General prompts are provided below for inspiration.

TDM GUIDELINES

• Please read the rules before posting to the TDM. These still apply here and will be enforced, up to and including deleting tags/toplevels and prebanning.
• Posts from a TDM are required to apply. At least three tags across any number of threads within a TDM, posted within the last 6 months, must be provided in every application.
• TDM threads can be used for AC. Note that new characters only need to check in for their first AC cycle, but established characters can use TDM tags for their AC.
• TDMs are not considered game canon by default. This is mostly for logistics reasons - due to how characters travel on the map, it's unlikely that non-network threads that take place here will actually happen in-game. However, I won't stop anyone from working out how to make parts of threads game canon if they really want to.
• New TDMs will be posted every three months. Keep checking back into the current TDM for new toplevels!

I. ARRIVAL

You awaken on a tropical island beach, soaking wet, powerless, and without any idea how you got here. Were you carrying something important, or wearing powerful armor? How unfortunate - it looks like only the most basic clothes, items in your pockets, and simple weapons managed to make the trip with you. Are you even physically the same as you remember? If you had superhuman abilities tied to your physiology, you might be stuck in a completely different body that lacks your usual senses. You might've been whisked away from a tense battle or a near-death experience and wake up delirious, or even injured.

Thankfully, against overwhelming odds, you're not the only one to wake up on this particular stretch of beach. You and your companion have a lot of puzzling out to do.

II. NETWORK

Even if you weren't lucky enough to wake up near someone else, at least you've arrived with a military-grade radio transceiver gripped tightly in your hand (or mouth, or other vaguely opposable appendage of choice). The clunky walkie-talkie will start buzzing and crackling for every public message that starts coming your way. Answering them back is as easy as pressing the "talk" button on the side of the device and either speaking into the receiver, or using the keypad to type into the message box that appears on the screen, then pressing the button again to send. A list of ongoing conversations with responses that are less than 24 hours old can be found by scrolling through the menu, identified by the callsigns that are participating in them. It seems that you've been assigned a callsign, too - it shows up in the top right side of the screen, format AB123C. The letters and numbers picked are...probably random.

This is your easiest avenue to communicating, or coordinating with, or complaining at the other people stuck on this island; how you decide to use this tool is up to you.

III. EXPLORING

For a place that appears, by all signs, to be an equatorial island in the middle of a tropical ocean, the local environments are surprisingly diverse. Beaches range from idyllic white sand to storm-swept pebble crags to cliffs with waterfalls cascading off the edges; the interior forests can be thinned from sandy soil or dense jungles full of prickly underbrush and with towering canopies; and the central mountain peaks, perilous enough to climb on their own, terminate in ravines and sinkholes that are hidden by thick foliage until you already have one foot over the edge.

The animals that make their homes here are equally as varied, and sometimes just as dangerous. The standard Earth fare of tropical fish swim right up to most shores, especially where reefs have grown, and a multitude of seafaring and jungle birds make their homes in ocean-facing cliffs and trees. Any one of these creatures would make for an easy snack. But you're not the only opportunistic hunters here; sharks prowl the waters, big cats stalk the jungles, and feral boars raid any camps that smell enticing. And that's just the stuff that looks like it came from modern Earth. Your improvised fishing rod might have captured a trilobite, or maybe that deer you were stalking has rounded on you with a set of alien mandibles full of sharp teeth. Or maybe, among the plants and animals completely foreign to you, you've stumbled across one that's strangely familiar to your home and no one else's.

There's a lot to figure out about this place. At least, in this instance, you aren't doing it alone.

Martin can't recall the last time he was in the ocean. He's fairly certain he's never been in a tropical ocean. Or the tropics, in general. The crashing of the waves is what clues him into the ocean part. The balmy air against his salt-encrusted skin points to the latter. He opens his eyes and finds his glasses have come off at some point, which means the world around is a smear of colors. He sees someone nearby and forgets about the glasses entirely.

"Jon? Hey, hey, are you okay?" He's assuming this is his boyfriend. He really hopes it's Jon.

"Um. H-hello? This is- My name's Martin. I'm-I'm on a beach? God, that's not helpful. Sorry. I just- I-I'm alone. Is there anyone out there who knows what's going on?" A long pause. "Uh- Oh! Over! Over."

Arrival

"Uh, nope," says Shaw, reminding herself sternly that John is a very common name, and the odds are low that this guy is looking for the one that she'd very much like to find. "Wrong person."

The way he's squinting makes it pretty easy to figure out what's going on, though, and she immediately drops her gaze to watch where she's stepping, not wanting to inadvertently crunch the guy's glasses.

"You haven't been moving around a lot, have you?"

Sameen Shaw | Person of Interest

I. ARRIVAL

"You've gotta be kidding me--" Shaw mutters darkly under her breath, pulling her wet gun out of her jacket pocket and looking at it in dismay. Scooting off the sand and onto a patch of beach grass, she shrugs out of her leather jacket (also wet) and spreads it out as best she can on the ground, using it as a makeshift mat to disassemble the gun on.

It's only now that she finally looks up and acknowledges her companion. A girl has her priorities, and they go gun first, then talking to strangers.

"Hey, uh, stupid question; do-- do you know where we are?"

II. NETWORK

[As is probably inevitable when a large group of people are given free rein with walkie-talkies, not everyone is going to use them strictly for business purposes. Maybe you're one of the people having a long, public personal conversation and/or argument and/or phone sex session, or maybe you're just another bystander. Either way, you're bearing witness to callsign TO994M breaking in with--]

Chloe has been lying flat on her back with her eyes closed, carefully testing her limbs to make sure everything's still attached, but cracks one eye open at another person's voice.

"Not gonna lie, I was hoping you could tell me. Don't feel nearly beat up enough to have floated all the way out to sea." She does feel at least a bit beaten up, though: it's obvious to look at her that she's taken a couple of nasty hits to the face pretty recently.

Chloe sits up then, feeling gross in her salt-heavy wet clothes, and smiles at the other woman. "I'm guessing we're probably still in Malaysia. How'd you wind up down here?"

[He was supposed to be dead.

Sprawled on the ground, Kokichi just lays there for a while, processing. He's no longer laying on the cold metal of the hydraulic press, but on...sand? No longer inside at all, and not even anywhere outside he recognized from the school – insofar as any of that really counted as "outside" anyway. The sky is real. There's an actual breeze and the sound of waves. He's soaking wet for some reason.

But he's pretty sure he did, in fact, die. It's been quick, but he remembers that split second of intense pain before everything went dark. Could that have been faked somehow? After all the inconsistencies and fuckery he'd noticed in the killing game, "real" seems a lot less obvious than it should be. And more bullshit is way more likely than just being in heaven, at least for him.

He should be moving. Figuring out what fresh new hell this is. But given the circumstances, he can probably be forgiven for just...laying there on his back for a while, staring at a sky he didn't think he'd ever see again and unsure how he should feel about being alive. He licks his lips, and grimaces at the taste on them.]

Ugh, salty...

[None of the voices he's heard are familiar. That's wild enough on its own. Kokichi spends a while just listening to the messages coming through, trying to get a clearer picture of the situation. When he finally decides to make contact, though, of fucking course he can't be normal about it.]

Mayday, mayday! SOS!! There's a huuuge snake trying to eat me!

[His screaming is pretty dramatic for someone just sitting peacefully under a tree at the edge of the beach.]

He's only delved a short way into the jungle when he practically trips over it – a thick rope of a scaly body sticking out from beneath the undergrowth. Kokichi goes down with a yelp. And as he's pushing himself up, he freezes as he hears the hissing sound only a few feet away.

Arrival

[The first thing she does after staggering to her feet is stare. The ocean is jewel blue, and the light glancing off it from the open sky above makes her eyes water, but she just can’t blink. Not yet. She needs to breathe it all in, let it find its place in her.

It doesn’t take. Her lungs are paralyzed, her body frozen. It’s just water soaked to her skin and sand in the sides of her practical loafers — $39 at Target, a good deal at the time. Not at all what she’d have worn today, if only she’d known.

The landscape stretches out on all sides of her. She is dwarfed by the unknown, and she has nothing but the clothes on her back, her car keys in one hand, a radio in the other. That alone is of little concern; she doesn’t need things as much as she needs a sense of realness: there is no adrenaline surge to distract her from how wrong this is.

She drops her things to the sand and puts her hands on herself immediately — her hips, her stomach, her chest, inventorying her own body. ]

Oh my god. [Her voice is soft, almost babyish. It’s finding itself rapidly, growing intense with repetition:] Oh my god, oh my god.

[Shauna is out of place. She would look at place in the slightly outdated kitchen of a modest suburban home, or running errands in a Ford Windstar, or on the sidelines of her child’s soccer practice meet. But don’t let the slightly oversize blouse and mom jeans confuse you: she is not, absolutely not a soccer mom. She is just stressed, and it positively radiates off her, her lips pursed, her gaze tense. Unblinking. Sad.

She stares you down, hands at her sides. There’s already muddy smears on the knees of her jeans, dirt under her nails. She draws a deep breath, as if to steady herself. There’s a shred of impatience on her voice.]

So… um. Have you ever done this before?

[She is already hungry.]

1. Arrival

[ Ah, there's nothing like a blissful day at the beach! The cool water, the salty air, the sizzle of frying... Yato?

With an echoing shriek, the pale little unconscious girl that had been peacefully and bobbing along in the shallow waves suddenly springs to life. One hand clamps down over her burning face as the other begins to thrash wildly in the water that would barely reach her thighs if she were standing. It might almost look like she's downing, until one of her hands meets the purple umbrella floating not to far away. All of a sudden, she's calmly on her feet, opening the umbrella.

She breathes what sounds like a combination of a pained sob and a sigh of relief, as she tenderly explores the skin around her nose with her free hand. Surveying the beach, and others waking up, she begins to get an idea of what's happening, generally. ]

I do not remember coming the beach aru. [ She winces at the pain from touching her sun burned nose ] Gin-chan! We have to go home! My original character traits are returning aru!

2. Network

Good afternoon,
Did you know that you could bless this poor young and starving girl with a miracle? A way out of the darkness of this horrible beach and into the light of a fully loaded dinner table. All it takes is one fully loaded dinner table and a heart. Or money. Money would be good too. So open your heart and your oven or wallet today!

3. Exploring

[ As the day's gone on, Kagura has begun to realize something isn't right. There hasn't been a sign of her friends, she doesn't know where she is, and she really is hungry. Resigning to look for shelter and some type of food, she heads into the jungle tree line at the edge of the sand. She marches along, using her umbrella to part the thick plant life and down her best not to look worried.
While deciding what kind of animal she might be willing to hurt to get a decent meal, fate actually makes the decision for her. A large snake drops its head in front of her from the canopy above. It gives her just enough warning to roll out of the way. With surprising speed, the snake moves to surround her with its body, but Kagura winds up and punches it hard in the head... Which does pretty much nothing. Confused, as the snake should be in another zipcode at this point, she unleashes a barrage of smacks with her umbrella. Obviously, this angers the snake, which moves to strike at her, as she trips over a section of its body behind her. She barely avoids the bite, and as soon as she gets to her feet she takes off running, though at the normal pace of a 14 year old girl, which is not at all what she's used to. ]

HELP! SNAKE!!

[ Is all she manages to bark out between pants. This sucks. ]

[It is an excessive amount of effort to type on these radio things. The poor young girl is getting a voice response.]

I'm not really sure money's going to do much good here. I haven't seen anything like a town. Maybe you can look around in the trees. There might be some tasty fruit to tide you over?

Chloe Frazer | Uncharted

ARRIVAL

All things considered, Chloe is pretty excited to be alive. Being caught sneaking around a paramilitary camp is bad enough without falling off a cliff in the ensuing firefight, and despite being thoroughly waterlogged she doesn't even feel half drowned, which is amazing. Couldn't have asked for a better outcome.

Except not being caught, maybe. Oh well.

Chloe gets to her feet, groaning, then freezes halfway through trying to redo her ponytail so she can see anything through all the wet hair stuck to her face when she spots the silhouette of another person.

"Who's there?"

EXPLORING

Okay, so this place is looking less and less like it's anywhere near Malaysia by the minute, which is obviously making finding the way back to Nadine and the jeep a bit of a difficult proposition. Not to mention that this stupid radio will not stop beeping, and no one using it seems to sound remotely like either her enemies or her partner.

She's just starting to cut her way into the underbrush, arguing animatedly out loud with herself about whether she's lost or not (she's not; it's fine, but what if she is? What if Nadine gets hurt trying to find her? What a joke, she's tougher than anyone) when she accidentally disturbs a colourful ground bird in its nest.

The bird opens its beak to make its displeasure known and Chloe finds herself shrieking and falling on her ass in a very uncool way as a thin stream of fire shoots from its open mouth.

Exploration

Leaving what friendly face he'd found wasn't his first choice, necessarily, but not exploring the island at all seemed beyond dumb. A little walk into the brush turned into following a slight path and then the sound of a female voice...talking to herself? Maybe. It was potentially another friendly face, so he was going to take the direction while he had it.

He's just about come up behind her when there's a stumble from her ahead and a shriek and Jet's instincts kick in, sending him rushing forward...and almost directly into a stream of fire. "What the-!"

He looks down at the angry colorful bird and the tumbled branch near its nest. Ah. "Yeah, I might spit fire too if someone almost crush my home."

Jet turns towards the woman and offers a hand out to her as he moves to put himself a bit more between her and the bird. Not all of his cybernetics seemed to be functioning how they should, but he was reasonably sure his fire-resistance was still working. "Hey. You alright there?"

Randvi | Assassin's Creed

Arrival

The first thing that Randvi notices, even before she opens her eyes, is the smell of the sea. It's a scent that's as familiar to her as her own name, yet one that she's not experienced in nearly a year. Not to mention one that indicates that she's nowhere near Ravensthorpe.

She tenses and sits up quickly - there are few reasons that she would be so far from her home and not know why and none of them are good - and that's when she notices both the weight of her sodden clothing and the high temperature.

It's strange, because there is no captor nearby and nothing has been taken from her, but this is a land that she's never seen before, or even imagined. It's beautiful. And somehow she, Randvi, is the one who gets to see it, perhaps the one to describe it to those only able to wistfully look at a map.

She's still afraid, but the fear is slowly being animated by excitement, like a cloud of fireflies swirling in her stomach. There's no telling what dangers might lurk in this place, but for the first time since she'd left for Fornburg, even if it's only for a short while, maybe she can be free.

A delighted laugh slips out before she can stop it. As it continues, it grows a wild edge, and soon she is sitting in the surf, head thrown back and laughing at the sky.

Eventually a faint voice appears in the static, but the button is still being pressed at random]

--I. Arrival

[ Waking up face-first in the sand is hardly Squalo's idea of a good time. As far as he remembers, he wasn't on any sort of a ship or plane that could have lead to this situation. Did he die? Was this somebody's shitty idea of Hell? Might as well be, considering he's soaked head to toe, and now there's sand clinging to his wet hair, as well. ]

[ He rinses off in the ocean the best he can and goes to check his belongings. His artificial hand is still working, luckily, and his sword blade may or may not have made it as well, but that's about where the luck ends. His cellphone, apparently not as waterproof as the warranty suggested, isn't picking up any signals, and he's losing his patience quicker than his battery charge. ]

[ If you happen to be nearby, you might notice a tall, lean figure with four feet of hair striding across the beach with Karen-esque determination before swearing loudly and throwing a phone into the sand in frustration. ]


--II. Network

[ Well. Time for round two. His own cell might not be working, but he does also have a prehistoric walkie on him for whatever reason, so he's going to try his luck. His voice easily cuts through the static, too loud for comfort to anybody who hasn't turned their volume down. ]

Hey! Anybody alive out there? Hello? S-O-S? C'mon, you piece of crap, work!!


--III. Exploring

[ Well. For all of his spending some time in pretty shitty places, he's a city boy in his heart, and survival in a goddamn uninhabited island is certainly not one of his strong suits. He leans in suspiciously to examine some very colourful berries. ]

That's definitely poisonous, isn't it? Well, fuck you too, nature. [ He gestures with his right hand extensively as he talks. ] Hey, how did you end up here? This isn't some kinda hidden camera bullshit, right?

If we can find a pond, there's probably water lotus around here. If this is a prank, maybe if we’re really boring they'll give up.

Levi Ackerman // Attack On Titan

--1. Arrival

[ He's not sure if he remembers the explosion. That thunderspear was about to blow up in his face, he tried to put some distance between them -- and then nothing. And then he was here, in the sand, soaked to the bone as if he swam here but he knows for a fact that he didn't (another in the long list of downsides of spending over three quarters of your life in a hole in the ground: not exactly many lakes to learn swimming down there. It just wasn't needed). It's way too bright. It's just like -- ]

[ The seaside? ]

[ He coughs out some water and pushes himself to his feet, taking in his surroundings. He doesn't think he's injured, however lucky and unlikely that is, but his gear is gone. He's just got his clothes and whatever he happened to have in his pockets -- a knife, at least, should come in hand -- and there's something new. A device similar to that "radio" thing, but much smaller. Why? What was going on? ]

[ He spots another silhouette and after a moment of hesitation makes his way toward them, though keeping what he deems a safe distance. If it's Zeke bloody Jaeger -- well, he's finishing his job with a fucking knife if need be. ]

[ Doesn't seem to be him, though, and his grip on the blade inside his pocket relaxes. ]

...Where are we?

[ He sounds kind of soft in a tired way, if low, and he's fairly short for a guy. He definitely doesn't look too intimidating to anyone who doesn't know him. ]


--2. Network

[ He's seen tech sort of like this, but his world is still quite behind modern times, so it'll take a while for him to figure it out. He at least understands that the noises coming from the device means someone is trying to communicate, so he tries to get to higher ground, poking at the thing and pressing buttons on the way. As soon as he hears anything remotely similar to words, he's pressing it to his ear to listen. ]


--3. Exploration

[ Despite not technically having experience in a place like this, he seems to be taking to the predicament fairly well. He's leaning against a tree, peeling a fruit that he knows from seeing once or twice on the market is safe to eat, and giving grumpy glances to whatever (un)lucky(?) person ended up in his company. ]

We need to find a source of clean water first. [ He's still talking in that quiet monotone, though he'll raise his voice a little if he thinks the other person is not listening. ] See anything useful on your way here?

There's a waterfall, about a quarter of an hour back the way I came. The river flows east.

[Much of Randvi’s earlier excitement has faded due to the realities of wearing clothing designed to weather harsh Norwegian winters in a tropical climate. Even stripped down to the fewest layers possible she might not have survived the trip without finding water]

I have a unicorn horn if you wish to purify it first.

Shion Uzuki | Xenosaga

1. Arrival

[ For a split second, when Shion awakens on the beach, she's actually happy. Seeing an almost familiar natural landscape after months of extremely slow and desolate space travel will do that to a person. As satisfying and grandiose as it was to save the entire universe from a cosmic horror or two, there's still a small part of her that wishes to go back to a time where she lived on a tropical island and hadn't yet incurred the losses that would come from choosing to be a hero.

It doesn't take long for her to realize that isn't what's happening here though. This island isn't on Second Miltia, there's no galaxy-wide network, and her family is still gone. Oh joy. But, as confusing as all of this is, it's nice to feel sunshine and smell the ocean again. And at least she's not alone. She can spy a few others who seem to be waking up here as well, and she waves tentatively at the nearest one ]

2. Network

I take back anything I ever said about your fascination with ancient technology, Jin.

[ Shion smiles a bit sadly as she mumbles this to herself, readying the green radio that was mysteriously in her possession upon arrival. She knows exactly how it works because she often rolled her eyes as her brother taught her to use a similar one when she was a child. She hits talk, and rolls through her mentally and hastily prepared spiel. ]

Radio check, this is Shion Uzuki. Is anyone listening? Over.

[ Yep, that's it. ]

3. Exploration

[ Shion hasn't actually ventured too far from the beach in her exploring, she's just inside the rain forest's canopy, attempting to lash some large unsplit palm fronds together with some vine she found to form a makeshift rain catch. It's not going so well, and she tosses it aside with a scoff of frustration for a moment, knowing she'll have to come back to it. She didn't see any water outlets to the ocean, so fresh water might be a long trek away, if there even is any. And with the warmth and humidity, they're going to be in trouble sooner than later if they don't think of something... ]

Sorry, that was really stupid. I'm Martin Blackwood. Are you- Okay, if you're like me and some of the other people I've been talking to, you're probably not okay, but... but are you, um... as okay as you can be in the circumstances? Over.

[He wakes up covered with sand and salt water, completely disoriented. Before anything else, he grabs his glasses out of the sand, shoves the slightly oversized black plastic frames on his face with his small hands.

Those in place, he looks around. Warm water, seabirds, high angle of the sun, tropical plants in the forest stretching back from the sandy beach, all indications of somewhere far more equatorial than Japan. It's a quick, appraising glance, as he takes in his surroundings, with a focus that's very much at odds with his appearance. A kid as little as Conan is should probably be freaking out right now. (He is, actually, but he's a detective through and through and so his freaking out is currently manifesting as urgent investigation).]

Careful. [Says the small-for-his-age seven year old, as he crouches down to look for footprints in the sand. ] Don't move around too much. Do you know what's going on?

[Edogawa Conan, callsign DC770K is absolutely going to use the text function on this thing. Judging from the voices he's heard, he's apparently the youngest person here by far, and he doesn't want to deal with any overprotective adults when he's just trying to get his bearings.]

Has anyone found anything of interest yet? Or started making a map of our surroundings? I'd also like to know if anyone has any memories of how we actually arrived here.

[There is a very small child (like, maybe five or six years old? he's tiny) trying to climb a tree. He's doing a pretty good job, all things considered, though he's currently stuck on a branch about six feet off the ground, a determined frown on his face and one hand braced against the trunk as he stands on tiptoes trying to grab the next branch, just out of reach.]

[Kokichi is also teeny. Not five year old teeny, of course, but he can sympathize with the struggle. And maaaybe, childish as he is himself, he has a soft spot for kids.

Not that he'd ever admit to it. He's supposed to be the bad guy, after all.

It also raises some more questions about what the fuck is going on here that there's even such a small child, but he can grapple with those later. For now, he does the only rational thing, which is hop up to grab the lowest end of the kid's branch and dangle himself off the ground. Possibly not the safest move with a small child actively standing on it, but he's rational, not responsible.]

A cacophony of confusing sensory information enters Lalo's brain quickly but in pieces, and not in the right order. He realizes his jacket is heavy on his back before realizing that's because it's wet. He feels the sun beating down on his face before he recognizes the rough sensation of individual grains of sand clinging to his hands and cheek and the hairs of his mustache. He rubs the damp, clinging particles of sand off as he begins to sit up, his gestures slow and groggy at first.

Why is he wet?? How did he get here? Where is "here?" The thought crosses his mind that this, too, is somehow Fring's doing, but a quick glance around dispels that hazy, half-awake thought almost immediately. Something on this scale, whatever it is, seems impossible even for Fring.

Especially because he's not alone; a groan or the feeling of someone shifting their weight beside him or the sight of another person laying face down in the sand draws Lalo's attention.

He jumps to his feet with surprising speed when he spots someone else nearby. Especially surprising because Lalo is clearly injured, although none of his wounds seem serious or life-threatening. But there's a dark red scrape on the side of his cheek, and a very slight limp as he stumbles a little when he jumps up.

He can feel the weight of a handgun in the waistbands of his pants, and he draws it.

The other person will regain consciousness staring down the barrel of a gun. "Hey, hey, hey. Shhhh." He'll lower the hand that isn't holding the gun repeatedly, like he's gesturing to quiet a barking dog or a tantrum-ing toddler. "Easy, easy. No sudden movements. That's it," Lalo warns them. "Stand up slowly. Hands where I can see 'em." His voice is calm and instructive, but his eyes are dark and intent.

What? You've never seen a seventeen year old kid, in a soaking wet suit and tie, fight a wild boar with a rapier before? Isn't this how everyone went about getting their bacon in the morning?

Alright, maybe not and in all honesty Lockwood hadn't gone out looking to pick a fight with the local wildlife. He wasn't a hundred percent and he wasn't really that hungry yet, but he and the boar had crossed paths and the boar had decided to make an issue of the situation. Lockwood had considered running but he knew that unless the creature gave up the chase, eventually he'd have to climb something and he wasn't physically up to climbing trees.

That left stand and fight. Good news being that Lockwood was used to fighting in close quarters, so even though they were in the tangled underbrush of the boar's territory, the youth had gotten in a couple good strikes. The fight looked to be closer to finished than started, and if anyone around knows how to dress wild board, their skills may be needed shortly.

Senku opens his eyes and immediately thinks that he should just start keeping a diary of how many times he's woken up in an unfamiliar landscape. Though the other times, he's been totally aware of how and why he got somewhere. This time…what was he doing just before now?

Think.

If he was on the ship just before now, there would be signs of a wreck, but…there's nothing here. There are no petrified people littered around the beach or anywhere in sight as far as he can tell. He can't place the landscape and there are few clues as to location. Even the immediate vegetation doesn't tell him enough to get his bearings. They'd been travelling so he's not even sure what continent this is. He's missing several of his pouches, chemicals and items carefully curated. Most of the (comparatively) higher tech stuff is gone, of course, though he still has the defunct Medusa and some revival fluid.

"This is pretty exciting," he says to no one in particular, but someone else nearby might hear it. It might sound a little bit deranged, actually, whoops.

If and when he notices a companion, all he says is, "No point staying around here and waiting for answers. We'll have to figure a way out of here on our own."

Sometime later, catch him digging up something near the edge of the waves, sketching in the sand (seemingly oblivious to things around him), or stripping leaves off a vine. He's dressed pretty weird, probably, so he might stand out.

II, NETWORK

Anyone out there started taking stock of natural resources, by any chance? Plants, minerals, food supply? Some of you have weapons on you which could come in handy. Coordination will get us a lot further than going it alone. I know that from experience.

I have a few road maps sketched out in the sand for where we go from here, but it's a little contingent on what we can find and when.

I set up a couple traps for small animals with some stripped vines, but I'll lay my cards on the table here. I'm not a fighter or a hunter. I'm a scientist. Gus's response to waking up in the water is less of a gradual groggy coming-to and more the actions of someone yanked violently into consciousness by a surge of instinctual bone-deep terror. Human water isn't constantly boiling, but it's easy to forget that when you've lived your whole life knowing any body of water can at best scald you and at worst melt your skin off and you just woke up. He frantically splashes his way to the shore, which isn't that much dryer, before his thinking brain catches up to his nervous system.

His ears droop in dismay as he stares at the ocean, then the plants, then the sky, trying to make any sense of this. The last thing he remembers was saying goodnight to Hunter in the basement of Luz's house, drifting to sleep, and then waking up here. Wherever "here" is.

At least when he was first stuck in the human realm, he had his friends with him.

And his...heart didn't feel so...weird?

Uh-oh.

He draws a circle in the air with his finger. Nothing. He tries a few more times. Still nothing.

"Ah!" he gasps, "my bile sack!"

He drops to his knees and frantically draws a small symbol in the sand. Nothing happens and he clutches his chest. He looks lost and the only reason he's not panicking is his very deliberate slow breathing.

The boy looks frail enough on a good day, but collapsed in the underbrush he's clearly more than a little ill. His hair sticks to his face, eyes unfocused and sunken, skin cold and clammy with sweat despite the heat. He gasps, breathing erratic, trembling with a hand clutched over his heart.

Clearly, the kid could use some help. Have some water handy, perhaps? Or maybe you really don't want to make this your problem--you can probably sneak by unnoticed.]

[ The boy has reason to be nervous. The figure who'd washed up next to him on the beach cuts an imposing figure, even freshly roused from unconsciousness. Umbra's great horned head rises first, staring eyelessly at the boy. There is no face to be seen on that inscrutable helm, not even any openings for breath or sight—just gilded gray steel, flecked with small blue lights.

Umbra growls, because it is one of the only things he's been able to do for centuries now and because he is confused and in pain and he doesn't know who this boy is. He is not another Tenno, is he? The growl in his throat dies down to a more plaintive sound before cutting out entirely. Is the boy a Tenno? Can he bring Umbra peace like the last one had done?

He reaches out with a steel-gloved hand, but he stops short of touching the boy. Rather, he simply holds out the hand, palm up, asking wordlessly for the connection that had been granted to him just moments earlier. ]

A monster washes up on the beach.

At least, it looks like a monster. Horned and gray, its dreadful bulk incongruously decorated with delicate golden trim, it might be easy to mistake for some grotesque work of sculpture. It doesn't move, for one thing—at least not for several long minutes.

'We accept this memory and move beyond its reach.' The child's voice still rings in its ears. For a few precious moments, the monster had known peace. It had known gentleness—

And now, it is alone again.

Unsteadily, its bulk rises from the sand. It feels weak; its body is heavier than it has ever known and its mind is in disarray. A low rumble sounds from its throat, muffled and confused. Where is the child? The Tenno? The one the glassy voice called the Operator? He needs to find them again, needs to get back to that peace, that acceptance. But where are they? Where is he? He takes in his surroundings without comprehension, the tropical waters stirring no memory within him—not that he has many to stir, in the first place.

He stays like that, stock-still and staring, until someone approaches. Someone who is not the child.

This time, the growl in his throat is much more clearly a warning.

With no answer coming, his worry rises exponentially. [Despite being thoroughly human, if wouldn't be surprising to think that you may have run into some kind of jungle monster. Ortho's flame hair is back to its full blazing glory and his shark-like teeth are visible in a wild smile from within a face that's covered in mud. At least his outfit seems typical of a teenage boy--well, one enrolled in a prestigious academy, at least. From where he crouches in the wet earth, he starts to remove his uniform's blazer so he can turn it into a makeshift covering for his head and shoulders.

His bright yellow eyes are much more friendly than menacing in their strangeness, at least, and he reacts as if it isn't all strange to see another person. After all, if he's appeared here with no warning, it's not too surprising that it's happened to someone else.]

Three | The Murderbot Diaries

[ When the SecUnit first wakes up on the desolate stretch of beach, its first thought is that it has been hacked.

On the most basic level, it would explain why it has come online in an unfamiliar place with no memory of how it got there. A partial memory wipe would explain the discrepancy, though clearly that is not all that has been done to it. Multiple modules are reporting non-responsive, so many that it cannot even retrieve a figure on its performance reliability. Low, seems like a safe estimate.

It pushes itself up from the sand, assessing the gap in its memory. It’s still dressed in the blue crew uniform of the Perihelion research vessel, having changed out of its armor at the bot-pilot’s orders. The retrieval mission had been a success; Murderbot 1.0 along with the research transport’s human clients had been safely extracted from the planet’s surface. And then—

It doesn’t know. Normally, partial memory fragments or at least the impression of lost time should be retained by its human neural tissue, but there is nothing. It is as if it had been on the Perihelion one moment and on this beach the next. It wishes it had access to its diagnostic functions but even the most basic of those are offline.

It’s then that it sees another figure sprawled out on the beach only a few meters away from its current position—and it knows its performance reliability must be even lower than originally estimated if it had taken it that long to notice. It approaches at once. Perhaps the figure is one of ART’s or Murderbot 1.0’s human clients. Perhaps they know what has happened.

Yet, as Three draws closer, the clearer it becomes that the figure lying in the sand is not from the Perihelion, nor is it one of Murderbot’s humans. Three freezes. ART and Murderbot’s clients had known it was a rogue SecUnit and had nonetheless offered it asylum. However, that is highly non-standard. It cannot expect the same of an unaffiliated human or augmented human—

It is too late to change course. The figure is already waking. ]

Please don’t be alarmed, [ Three says, its own alarm hidden behind a face as blank as the opaque face-plate of its currently-absent helmet. ] Do you require medical assistance?

ii. exploring

[ After that initial incident, Three does its best to avoid future encounters with humans or augmented humans. It does not rate its chances of passing as a contracted SecUnit to be particularly high, especially when it’s on its own like this, and its chances of passing as an augmented human are even lower. Thus, it does its best to move away from evidence of human activity, whether that be voices or newly-set-up campsites.

Eventually, it does almost manage to be surprised by a lone wanderer in the forests, the sound of their footsteps concealed by the riot of bird and insect life all around them. No matter. Three prepares to change route, turning away—when it catches sight of movement in the underbrush just a few meters from the wanderer’s position.

It focuses and the shadows resolve into a large, feline shape, stalking through the foliage—stalking the lone wanderer who doesn’t seem to have noticed the threat in their proximity.

Neither predator nor prey seems to have noticed Three yet. It could slip silently away and let the predicament before it unfold as it will. It is no longer contracted. It is not required to protect anyone anymore.

That line of thinking lasts approximately 3.9 seconds—a long interval indeed for a construct.

Then, it steps out into the wanderer’s path, a human figure in a blue transport crew uniform, forearms glittering with the metallic lines of subdermal cybernetics. ]

Please don’t be alarmed; I am here to help. [ It keeps moving, placing itself between the wanderer and the creature stalking them. ] There is reason to believe that you are being hunted by a native predator. Please remain behind me.

Damen had finally, finally been reunited with his people. He was finally going home, albeit in a very different way than he'd initially planned. He was back in Akielon clothes--a simple chiton clasped at the corner with a pin shaped like a lion--and while he still wore one gold cuff, he was a free man.

Or at least, in theory all of that's true. In practice, he's on a beach he knows isn't in Ios--not that he could possibly have gotten to Ios this quickly--and he's holding a strange black box. At least he still has a sword.

Then the strange black box starts talking and he yelps, hurling it away from him. It's not the most courageous move he's ever made, but at least it's a very, very impressive throw. Good thing he definitely won't need the weird talking box or anything... right???]

This isn't new.

He'd woken up practically naked on Eventide Island, and before that in the Shrine of Resurrection, so waking up fully clothed on a beach this time is an improvement. He lays there for a time, staring up at the sky and the few circling birds that inhabit it, listening to the surf and wondering where he is this time. He should probably be more alarmed, but what good would that do? He'll find a way around eventually and get back to Zelda and the others. They have a lot of work to do, after all, and its his duty to help. He wants to help.

He also wants to rest.

Lulled by the sound of waves, Link's eyes slip closed again. He'll get his bearings eventually, but the water tickling his feet is cool and the sun is warm and he can afford a little bit of time now that the world is at peace again...

Whether he's afforded his nap or not, Link's trying to puzzle through this new device that's replaced his Sheikah slate. He's still plopped in the sand, knees in butterfly position and the weird bit of technology in his lap. There's a button, but when he pushes it, it makes a goddessawful loud noise. Sometimes there's voices though, almost like when Zelda would speak to him from her imprisonment, but coming from the thing in his hands rather than inside his head.

Nothing for it but to try it.

The wilderness is Link's element. He's used to having maybe a few more tools but he's got a bow, five arrows, and the clothes on his back so that's something. Seeing as he doesn't have many, he's decided to use the arrows for defense instead of hunting until he comes across more of them. Instead, he's wandered into the tree line in search of other foraging opportunities.

Perhaps you catch him up a tree, clutching a branch for purchase as he leans out precariously to pick some fruit he's never seen before. Or maybe his head pops up from the side of a cliff as you make your way up the winding cliff. How did he get there? He climbed up the hard way on the sheer rock wall, of course. It's the most direct, after all.
