EVENT: SEIGE RESOLUTION

From the perspective of those stuck at the airfield, conditions seem to be slowly, incrementally improving. Barriers were built surrounding the airfield to keep its supplies safe from opportunistic boar raids, with the help of some timely intervention from other characters hassling their ranks, and a deal was struck to convince the tyrannical King Eki from dedicating so many of his boar troops from harassing the people that remained, at the cost of a life. Of course, many still doubted Eki's motives based on how adamant he seemed in his network post to conquer the entire island for his empire, and how convinced he was that the recent uprising of coconut crabs that decimated his lands was the new arrivals' faults. His forces remain for a full day afterwards, allowing people in and out, but not without following them and keeping constant vigil over those who remain.

Thankfully, all of this chaos helped one person slip past the boars. Dirk then disappeared for some time.

Suddenly, early into Day 044, the remaining boars patrolling around the airfield stiffen up and stare off into the distance at the same time, for several seconds. They all seem to regain their senses simultaneously, except they are now extremely confused; they shuffle around, squeal and nip at each other, and flee into the safety of the forest in equal amounts, generally ignoring anyone that they had been previously paying uncannily close attention to before. Eki's callsign disappears from the callsign list a few minutes later; so do any of Dirk's arrival possessions still left behind at the airfield.

The bizarre boar siege is now over.

EVENT: SIEGE

Characters at and around the airfield in tile IX may have noticed some signs that they've been attracting visitors. Some of them are subtle: A few hoofprints in the dirt near the jungle, a few missing provisions from the communal storage, some discarded fruit pits scattered beneath some trees. The run-ins with large boars have been significantly less so. Most of these encounters have been brief and marked with a distinct wariness of the airfield residents, but approaching Day 042, the atmosphere of tension has shifted. Something big is stalking the jungle in tile IX. Something angry.

As night falls on Day 042, that something - and its followers - makes its presence known. Anyone unlucky enough to be in or near the border of the jungle in tile IX is likely to be driven away by roving groups of huge, strange-looking boars, often traveling in pairs or triplets and each almost as tall as a human. They have the expected bristle-brown fur and build of wild boars, but with longer manes of fur and fat around their necks and partially covering their eyes, and their lower jaws split into two mandible-like sections around two sets of tusks. They charge at anyone either trying to leave or approach the airfield towards it or away, respectively, eventually leading to a barrier of screaming pigs in the forest.

A couple of hours in, a public message is sent over the transceivers.

EVENT: 1st FULL MOON RESOLUTION

As Night 028 draws to a close, most characters have found some level of safety from the crab menace - either eradicating the ones that get in their way or steering clear of them in general. The two giant coconut crab amalgams in tiles X and VII crash through the forest through the night, carving a ponderous, but nevertheless alarmingly fast path towards their respective bays. The great big hums and clicks continue to sound each hour.

Then, right as the first rays of sunlight start to color the horizon, the cadence of the noise changes:

.-.. .. ..-. . / --. --- . ... / --- -.
-... . -.-. .- ..- ... . / .. / .- .-.. .-.. --- .-- / .. -
-.. --- / -. --- - / ..-. --- .-. --. . -

The crab constructs, having frozen at the edges of the beach in massive, roiling piles, promptly disintegrate into their component parts. Coconut crabs slosh into the ocean by the thousands. And then, a few minutes later, the wave of displaced water they've created comes back in, sweeping along the beach on all sides of the island.

SETTING CHANGES

Several things have changed in the wake of this bizarre night of crabs:
  • In the first hour of Morning 029 following the crab collapse, a tsunami will rip through the first square bordering the beach on all sides of the island. This doesn't result in any lasting map changes, but it might make life difficult for any characters taking a beachside stroll at 4am.
  • Tiles X and VII have significant terrain changes, the extent of which will be revealed as characters explore the affected areas.
  • For the next five IC days, huge numbers of coconut crab corpses will wash up on beaches and clog river inlets. In the first hours of Morning 029, this could be a major boon for anyone in need of food; as the days go on, however, they just become magnets for scavengers and make the beaches reek of rotting seafood. Coconut crabs will stop appearing on search requests for the foreseeable future.

EVENT: STORM WARNING RESOLUTION

The earliest hours of Morning 021 promise more of the same from the last three days - black, swirling clouds, torrential downpours, howling gusts of wind that churn the seas and push already swollen rivers and tear down trees by the dozens. But as the sun starts to rise and backlight the perpetual vortex of thunderheads, suddenly, things change.

It doesn't matter where you are on the island. Four beams of light appear from distant points in the ocean, in tiles I, VIII, IX, and XII, although all of them seem faint and gutter out frequently. A brief pulse of something luminescent from the ocean in tile XV follows suit. Then, like a piece of paper burning over a fire, the storm melts away into a foggy morning sky.

SETTING CHANGES

Several things have changed on the island in the wake of the multi-day freak storm.
  • Plenty of items, natural and unnatural, have been blown onto the beaches and dropped from the sky, replenishing areas that have otherwise been scoured by character investigations. In addition, unique items and animals have appeared; finding them during the storm is more likely, but ones that are not discovered during those IC dates can still be found afterwards.
  • The island seems to be aware that too much water fell during the storm. Areas flooded from the ocean and rivers dry up within the day, and for the foreseeable future, there will be no rain. Hope everyone stockpiled enough rainwater over the last three days, or knows where their nearest clean river is!
  • Character-made landmarks associated with temporary camps/campfires/other unfortified structures will no longer be visible on the map; these will be removed from the map systematically as more search requests through the storm event dates are processed, to verify that protected/maintained landmarks remain marked.

Aside from these points, travel times are the same as they were pre-storm and the map has no notable changes.

EVENT: STORM WARNING

It's been a little more than half a month now of in-game time, and while characters have discovered plenty of oddities and dangers that have kept them on their toes, one thing that has remained pretty reliable has been the weather. Always a balmy 90F/32C during the day and 60F/16C at night, with sunny skies that show only a smattering of rain during the peak of afternoon to quench the thirsts of those characters that don't have reliable sources of fresh water yet. It runs like clockwork...almost suspiciously regular, in fact. Surely a place like this sees more fluctuations in the local environment, right? Maybe they're just in an especially stable part of the world, meteorologically speaking?

Signs of something strange going on start to appear during Day 017. Characters looking out to sea at the familiar fuzzy black line may notice that it seems darker and more prominent than usual, with noticeable tendrils of deep gray-blue starting to spiderweb over the horizon, approaching faster as night falls, right up until it becomes too dark to see them against the evening sky. Sudden flashes of light, like bursts of lightning, briefly illuminate the fuzzy, ragged lines overhead, the only blemishes in an otherwise clear night. The stars seem to warp around and outline them until, past midnight, it almost looks like the sky itself is cracking open like the shell of a dropped egg.

Then, soon after the start of Morning 018, the metaphorical egg shatters - and all hell breaks loose. The stars disappear behind a roiling, swirling mass of black clouds that billow downward, accompanied by instant torrential downpours, near constant lightning strikes, and howling winds that drive the surrounding ocean into a frenzy. And it simply doesn't let up, for three whole days.

EVENT: GAME START RESOLUTION

It's been five long days of constant announcements, drone patrols and sometimes attacks and kidnapping. It's probably started to get pretty stressful having to navigate the places where the drones sweep, or trying to figure out ways to figure your freed companions. Will they ever let up?

The answer is, apparently, yes. For anyone trapped in or hanging around the concrete structures on Morning 005, they might notice - of the drones that are still working and intact - that their charging pedestals are systematically going dark. The little indicator light that has been flashing on the fronts of each flickers and goes out as soon as a patrolling drone lands. By Night 005, even the announcements are starting to sound a little weird - sluggish, like an old toy running out of batteries.

Then, when the last drone lands on Morning 006, everything seems to go quiet at the same time. All pedestals go dark, the announcements cease, and the few lights still on in the concrete structures dim. The terminals shut off quickly after that, followed by the keycard readers next to each cell door. There's a series of hefty chu-chunks as the deadbolts disengage. The cell doors don't automatically rise up on their own, but they shouldn't be too hard to pull up by anyone still stuck inside of one.

Lucky for all of you, these drones don't appear to have a robust enough framework to keep functioning for longer than five days. Will they come back on again at some point in future? Hard to say. Someone might want to look into how to stop this from happening later. Until then, rest and relax - next month is a free month without a scheduled event, where characters can focus on recovering, rebuilding, and exploring, with only the usual threats of crossbow-wielding murderers and giant crocodiles in the rivers and the like. Have fun!

EVENT: GAME START

Welcome to Glencola Reef! It's looking to be a beautiful day here on the island - the temperature is mild in spite of it being early morning, the sun just barely cresting over the hazy blue horizon to the east, and the tide is slowly going out no matter what coast you woke up on. But for those of you waking up on the island's shores, soaked to the bone with no idea how you got here (or where here is, exactly), this probably is not a pleasant experience. Thankfully none of you appear to have found yourselves dropped into especially dangerous circumstances, which should give all of you time to assess this new situation and the people that are struggling through it with you.

However, this relative tranquility is unlikely to last long. For those of you traveling through tiles III, VII, or XV, the idle noise of waves and wildlife will be interrupted by the blaring of a crackly message from somewhere in the jungle: UNAUTHORIZED TRANSPORT DETECTED. VIOLATORS WILL BE DETAINED. The message will repeat three times at the start of every even hour, then go silent.

While trying to investigate this strange warning, you might also pick up the sounds of a transient humming or buzzing noise from somewhere nearby. Tile XV seems to have it the worst, with the sound starting and fading and starting up again almost constantly through the day. What could be causing this noise? And is it...following you?

This event will run from IC Morning 001 through IC Night 005, although it may end early based on character actions during this time. More details will be revealed in search requests in the specified areas, but you can use this post for questions, event-related discoveries, and plotting if you'd like!
