What's the most pathetic thing you've ever done to get someone's attention?

Oh god. [She laughs]

When I was first on my own, I used to go to bars and pretend my date stood me up so guys would feel bad for me and buy me drinks. I like, practiced thinking about sad things so I could cry.

Oh my God, you're right. That is patheticsville. I could never do that. Even guys like confidence.

Yeah, well. I didn't really have a lot to offer.

Hm. If you could take one thing from here home with you when we get out, what would it be?

[ Maddy grins. ] My sword! Look at it. Isn't it cool?! [ She hops excitedly, showing it off. ]

[Delighted] Would you look at that. You found this during the elephant storm?

A lot cooler than what we got.

Mmmmhmmm! Not during it. But right after. I'm pretty sure it washed up in the storm. [ She is SO pleased showing it off. ]

What did you get?

A weird little stuffed squid. Couple of tires and a driveshaft. Huge wooden bird statue almost fell on K.

Wow. That's crazy.

I found a necklace too. It's kind of warm when I touch it? Which is weird. It's pretty though.

And... I found this weird book.

I dare you to flirt with somebody and make Miss Taissa jealous on purpose! You get extra points if you can get her to chase away the person you're flirting with.

[ After all, jealousy is how you know somebody really loves you! Maddy Gets It (or thinks she does anyway, which might not be the same thing). ]

[Chloe laughs]

Oh, you've got a keen eye. I don't know if it'll work because I told her I was trying to make her jealous already. I can give it a shot, though.

That's because I know how people work. Especially with relationships. [ That's sort of true! Maddy has her moments of being astute about this kind of thing. Sometimes.

...and sometimes not, but hey, who's counting? ]

It's okay if it doesn't work, as long as you actually try. But who knows. If she loves you, she might still get jealous.

Really? [ She sounds surprised. ] Are... are you sure about that? Because I've been listening to you guys, and it sounds like you are. It might seem like lying to yourself will keep you from getting hurt, but that usually just makes it worse.

You can be close with someone without all that obligation. I like being around her, and I'm really grateful for what she did for me, but someday we’re both gonna go home.

I mean... does love have to be forever? You can still love somebody even if you're not meant to be together.

...Can't you? [ She sounds suddenly unsure, looking to Chloe for an answer. ]

Of course, but that's not really a good time, is it?

[She’s still fucked up about Nate and they broke up for the last time nearly a decade ago]

I don't know. That depends on you. I don't know if I'll ever be in love with anybody in a way that lasts. Here or in my world.

So I just feel like... I don't know, like maybe something temporary is the best I can hope for. To love somebody. Like, really love somebody. I don't want to go through life without that. Even if it's not forever.

[ Maddy, by coincidence, is also fucked up about a guy named Nate. Their relationship is over now; getting back with him, after all the crap he's pulled, is out of the fucking question.

But she's still invested, despite herself, in the idea that she did love him, even if he didn't love her back. Can he even love anybody besides himself? She used to think so, but she's not sure anymore. ]

That fire’s not always love, you know. And that's fine, but it can suck figuring it out.

[Chloe has realized since then that it wasn't really about Nate himself so much as his belief that she was a worthwhile person. She had thought she couldn't do it unless he was seeing her that way, but now she can almost see it on her own. They're friends now and both better off for having given up on the passion between them that had kept on flaming out.]

It doesn't have to last to be worthwhile. Sometimes something better can rise from the ashes. I don't know if it's like that here or not.

But it was love! I know the difference between love and, and... obsession, or passion. I've been in love.

[ She's adamant, the way only teenagers can be when they feel challenged on something they're sure about... when more than one adult has already told her exactly what Chloe is saying. She didn't listen then and it's unlikely she'll listen now. At least not right away. ]

Why wouldn't it be like that here?

[Chloe shrugs. Maybe she's right. It's not like she's really invested in this kid’s love life anyway.]

Sometimes that can suck, too.

Takes a long time for those wounds to heal sometimes. I don't know about you, but I'm not planning on being here for years.

[ Maddy nods. ]
